This booklet is the final in a series of three technical booklets on the nutrition and feeding of fish farmed in Europe. The species focussed on by the ARRAINA project are: Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, common carp, European sea bass and gilthead sea bream.
It provides a reliable set of biomarkers and associated methodologies to assess the nutritionally mediated effects on growth performance, metabolic homeostasis, stress responsiveness and health condition of fish which are fed new diet formulations from early life stages to completion of production cycle and sexual maturation.
As part of the FOOD 2030 high-level conference held in Brussels in October, four parallel workshops were organised to provide ideas and needs towards building the future of EU research and innovation policy for Food and Nutrition Security. One of these - Aquatic food products and new marine value chains - was organised by the Marine Resources Unit of the Directorate General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission and looked at three thematic areas of aquaculture and fisheries: Underused fish biomass, new algae value chains for food and consumer acceptability of aquaculture products. Since EAS was founded in 1976, much has happened in European aquaculture. We have put together a series of milestones to give you an overview of what EAS has achieved during the last 40 years. AQUATT and AMC Ltd celebrate the 9th anniversary of the Lindsay Laird Award at the EAS 40th Anniversary held in Edinburgh, capital of Scotland, where Lindsay spent most of her professional life as an academic but also working closely with the expanding aquaculture industry on different aspects of salmon production. She was a real all-rounder: a member of the EAS Board from 1994 to 2000, the first Chairman of the Organic Fish Producers Association, she lectured in Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, the Philippines and Borneo as well as Aberdeen; she combined her aquaculture and language expertise to translate both volumes of the French classic Aquaculture by G. Barnabe into English and helped compile the multilingual AQUALEX aquaculture glossary.
Student winners of the award for innovation in aquaculture have so far come from Belgium, Spain, Portugal, the Czech Republic and Germany. This year’s winner will receive a iPad Mini, books from Wiley Blackwell, Springer and 5M publishing. All student posters submitted for Aquaculture Europe 2016 are eligible for the Lindsay Laird Award. More here (PDF)
Organised by the European Percid Fish Culture (EPFC) thematic group on the culture of pikeperch, perch and other species of the family percidae for human consumption, stocking and conservation.
The workshop will take place in Edinburgh on September 20, just before the AE2016 event.
Funded under Horizon 2020, the AquaSmart project is about enhancing innovation capacity within the aquaculture sector by helping companies to transform captured data into knowledge and use this knowledge to dramatically improve performance. AquaSmart data mines at the local level to a wider data pool by accessing, analyzing and managing large volumes of global knowledge and big/open data, in a multilingual, multi-sector and cross-border setting through an integrated cloud platform. COFASP (EU ERAnet Cooperation in Fisheries, Aquaculture and Seafood Processing) includes case studies as means to promote the emergence of joint research programs in fisheries, aquaculture and seafood science between European countries.
The case study for the aquaculture sector looked at similarities and differences in research priorities between north and south with workshops in Rome, Italy and Frøya, Norway.
